Honey & Sweetie PDF Print E-mail
They say the world is a pretty place, full of love and sunshine, where the chirp of birds fill the air and there is never any want for food or water, but that seems like another world, another lifetime away ...

Barely have I started my life, and I am left to fend for my own, no love, no food, no water, only mechanical monsters and people who pay no heed to my suffering, they act as though I do not exist, or they act as though they hate my existence.

No time to stop, no heart to stop, even as the mechanical monster tore the skin off my flesh, and my brain explodes with the excruciating pain. I cry until the pain numbs me and covers me like a burial cloth, and so I lay waiting, waiting till I can experience that world of sunshine and love ...

Honey, too weak to stand, at the vet. She is muzzled just in case she snaps out of fear. A hint of her injured left front leg can be seen.

Sweetie unable to stand because of her 2 fractured hind legs

On the 4th April 05 one late afternoon, we received a call from a member of the public asking us to help 2 puppies whose legs were 'badly injured' at Kaki Bukit. When asked to elaborate on that, he said one of the puppy's leg had 'no skin'. Probably a maggot wound infection, or so we thought, but nothing prepared us for the extent of the injury, one that shook even our seasoned rescue volunteer, Yvonne.

Under a lorry, unable to move, traumatised and shocked to numbness lay Honey, just a fraile and tender 3 month puppy, her skinny frame trembling, hips and ribs showing, and her eyes wide with fear and pain. There was literally no skin left on her front left leg, it was just a raw and bleeding mass of tissue, blood and bone. She was probably ran over by the many heavy vehicles plying that area, another hit and run victim, and was just waiting for the relief of death to take over ...

Lying nearby was the other puppy, Sweetie, also immobilised and unable to move. Externally she looked alright, save for some flesh wounds on her hips, but she couldn't stand up and she was just as weak as well.

They were rushed to the vet and were immediately given medication for their pain and trauma, but the diagnosis was grim. We were initially hopeful that Honey's leg could be saved, but the vet said there was too much infection and the muscles and tendons were all torn up, and amputation was the only way to save her. We decided to go with the vet's recommendation on the basis that she was young and strong and would learn to deal with the handicap.

Sweetie was found to have a fractured hip on one side and a fractured knee on the other hind leg, but the vet advised holding off the surgery until she gained more strength.

Honey's operation went smoothly without any complications and both puppies are now recuperating at foster homes, but the psychological scars would take a long while to heal.

Throughout their ordeal and suffering, neither of the puppies were aggressive inspite of their pain and were not resistant to the treatment. Either they were too weak, or they knew we were trying to help ...

It's been about a week now at the foster home, and Honey has been quietly lying on her side, unable or unwilling to stand up, or perhaps coming to terms with her handicap. We could still sense that air of hopelessness and helplessness around her and there was no spark of life in her eyes. She is still wildly terrified of people, her eyes ablaze with fear and apprehension whenever we went near, and with each gentle touch, she would flinch as though we were about to hit her, so deep seated is her trauma ...

It was a similar case with Sweetie but as with all things, light will always prevail over darkness, and our fosterers have told us recently that they have managed to get up to relieve themselves away from their sleeping areas, such is the intelligence and cleanliness of these puppies !

As we embark on another journey with these young survivors, we invite you to join us in helping them fufil their full potential and to start life anew.
